(a) How it began

Two chairs at one board.

Chessvine started the way most good things do — with two people and a board. A young man who loved the game and a church elder who loved the people around him sat down and asked a simple question: where can anyone in Pulaski play, learn, and belong?

Together they built the answer. A safe space for chess lovers to find real opponents, and for those who have never touched a piece to learn a new skill without ever feeling out of place. That agreement between the two of them is still our whole rulebook: the board is for everyone.

Chess as a means of fellowship.

At Philadelphia SDA Church, the board is how we fellowship. Each game is a conversation — a place to slow down, listen, and look out for one another. No rating required, no pressure to win — just a community that shows up, move after move.

Mentorship

Experienced players sit beside newcomers, one move at a time. Nobody learns alone here.

Belonging

A regular circle of faces — whether you're a master or a first-timer, there's a seat with your name on it.

Patience

We play slowly, talk honestly, and let the game teach its own lessons at its own pace.
